A greener web is a darker one

There are a couple of interesting posts over at EcoIron, detailing the energy saving potential of simply changing webpage colour palettes!
CRT monitors use a combination of three shades to produce a range of colours: all three shades need to be glowing brightly to produce white. The idea is that energy and money would be saved by darkening webpages.
The first post uses a few simple calculations to show that if Google changed its palette to white text on black, instead of black on white, a staggering estimated $75,000 per year could be saved globally.

The second post shows an energy saving colour palette that can be applied to any webpage, while remaining readable.

This Energy Star page lists the power rating of different colours, and has other computer-monitor related energy saving tips.

Over at Saving Energy, there is another good in-depth analysis of monitor energy savings, including a comparison between CRT and LCD monitors.

I should probably go and change my monitor and blog settings right now!
